The Great British Sewing Bee

Updated: Aug 5, 2019

It’s back! The Great British Sewing Bee is back on our screens and what a start to the season it’s been. Already we’ve seen some gorgeous outfits, some dubious design choices and Juliet’s jumpsuit which was certainly a worthy winner of garment of the week. I must also admit to enjoying the addition of Joe Lycetts cheeky humour to the show.

To celebrate the return of the Great British Sewing Bee we are offering 10% off all the products featured in this weeks blog post. However, don't delay, the offer ends next Tuesday at midnight ready for the next installment.

This week started off with the ‘wiggle’ dress or as history would have us know it the pencil dress and that's what I want to focus on this week. The pencil dress developed from the pencil skirt, unsurprisingly, and for more information on how that came about have a look at our blog post on the subject.

For those of you inspired to make your own wiggle dress, I have scoured our collection of patterns and found a couple of options for you.

Our first option is the Joan dress by Sew Over it. Inspired by the wardrobe of the beautiful Joan Holloway of Mad Men the Joan dress is a must have for an vintage lover. A fitted bodice and skirt gives the dress a sassy, feminine feel that the real Joan herself would adore.

Our other option is the Bistro Dress by Liesl + Co. This semifitted sheath dress is designed to be flattering while also allowing you to move and to be comfortable. It includes a sash and belt loops for a more fitted look, and the pattern includes options for a wide variety of styles.

The main topic of this weeks episode was cotton fabrics and as we were told wiggle dresses work very well with cottons, therefore, it would be remiss of me not to make a few suggestions of cotton fabric that would work well with either of these wiggle dresses.

Flowery Chant Wild is one of my very favourite fabrics and with it's bold blush pink, fuchsia and teal blooms on a light grey background it would make a stunning wiggle dress.

The glimmer solids by Cloud 9 fabrics would be another excellent choice for a well fitted wiggle dress and will really make a statement. Made from 85% cotton and 15% metallic this fabric produces a sparkle that is really eye catching.

Blooming ground luscious is a beautiful 100% premium cotton fabric by Maureen Cracknell for Art Gallery Fabrics. With beautiful fushsia, blush pink, white and teal flowers on a dark blue background.

For more ideas and to view the rest of our fabric collection you find it here. Alternatively, if it's that perfect pattern you're after click here.

Roll on next week.
